Practical points before you book.
01
There are no direct flights from the US mainland. Major carriers connect once or twice through hubs such as Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul or Doha.
From the UK, a round trip with a layover in Singapore is popular and often good value.
02
The dry season, roughly April to October, is in high demand and fares rise as the date nears. For June travel, book several months ahead.
Families can ask for priority boarding and kids’ meals. For a premium trip there are private jet charters from Australia and business class for corporate retreats in Ubud.
03
A stopover can turn a long journey into a short city break. Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok are the usual stops, and a free 24-hour stopover in Jakarta is possible.
Many Asian carriers fly direct to Bali. Onward trips to other Indonesian islands, such as Raja Ampat, need a domestic connection after Denpasar.
04
Fully carbon-neutral flights are still emerging, but some airlines offer carbon offsets or fly newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft.
Groups of 10 or more need a specialised booking to secure good rates. Last-minute seats for the December wedding season are possible with flexible dates and airlines, but booking early is wiser.
05
Flexible fares with free cancellation are more widely available, though often at a slightly higher price. On the ground, budget from USD 150 a day excluding hotels for transport, food and activities.
The dry season is the most popular time to visit, with an average of nine hours of sunshine a day.
06
Ubud has no airport of its own, so every trip starts with a transfer from DPS. Keep these numbers in mind when you plan:
From Asia: Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, EVA Air, Korean Air, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways, Garuda Indonesia and AirAsia. From Australia: Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Batik Air. From the Middle East: Qatar Airways and Emirates.
Return economy runs about GBP 700–1,200 from major European cities, USD 1,000–1,800 from the US and AUD 400–800 direct from Australia. Expect more in July, August, December and January.
Most travellers do. Many nationalities can get a Visa on Arrival or e-VoA for 30 days, extendable once for 30 more; some are visa-free. Check current rules before you fly.
